George L. Bakris, MD, FACP, FCP is a professor in the Departments of Preventive Medicine and Internal Medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where he also serves as vice-chairman of the Department of Preventive Medicine. Dr. Bakris is the director of the Hypertension / Clinical Research Center and Fellowship Program at Rush and is a lecturer for the Division of Nephrology at the University of Illinois Medical Center.

Before his appointments in the Chicago medical arena, Dr. Bakris was an assistant professor of Medicine and Pharmacology and director of the Renal Fellowship Program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio from August 1991 through March 1993. He has served as staff nephrologist and director of renal research for the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, La. during 1988 through July 1991, and at the same time, was an assistant professor of Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine.

Dr. Bakris is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners (1982), the American Board of Internal Medicine for Internal Medicine (1986) and for Nephrology (1992). He has also received designation as a Specialist in Clinical Hypertension from the American Society of Hypertension (1999).

A member of numerous professional societies, Dr. Bakris currently serves on 14 editorial boards including the American Journal of Hypertension, American Journal of Nephrology, Hypertension, Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Ethnicity & Disease. He conducts research related to hypertension, diabetes, and renal disease and is currently engaged in clinical trials investigating the progression of diabetic renal disease and the effects of antihypertensive medications on renal disease progression. His research has been published in more than 70 articles, and he is the author of 48 book chapters.

Dr. Bakris has taken active roles with academic committees, advisory panels, and organizations across the country. He is currently the president of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology, a member of the Postgraduate Education Committee for the American Society of Nephrology, a reviewer for the American Heart Association and National Kidney Foundation; and co-director of the Masters of Science in Clinical Research Program at Rush Medical Center.

Recognized for his many achievements during his medical career, Dr. Bakris is the recipient of awards including: the National Kidney Foundation Award for Comprehensive Excellence in Medical Education (1993); the National Kidney Foundation of South Texas Award for help in organizing and making operational the San Antonio chapter (1993); recognition as graduating in the upper 10% of his medical class; and the Chicago Medical School Dean's Award (1981).
