ISHIB2004
Disparities in Cardiovascular Health: Bridging the Great Divide
June 13-16, 2004 - Detroit, Michigan
"The recently convened ISHIB conference in Detroit Michigan was an unqualified success. There was very robust participation in ISHIB community outreach activities and forums. Also, there was an impressive multidisciplinary flavor in both the scientific conference agenda as well as in the audience in attendance. ISHIB continues to gain strength as it relentlessly pursues its highly relevant agenda of preventing hypertension, improving blood pressure control amongst those already afflicted, and eliminating public health disparities in hypertension as well as in the burden of related cardiovascular diseases such as diabetes, kidney disease, heart failure, and stroke. ISHIB has an ambitious future agenda that includes having a much greater interface with the lay public, more visible advocacy on hypertension and cardiovascular health issues in the public policy arena, and the roll-out of innovative clinical programs focused on improving the clinical care of hypertension and related cardiovascular diseases." - John M. Flack, MD, MPH (ISHIB President)

Unite Detroit for Healthy Hearts
A Community Call to Action to Reduce Cardiovascular Disease Among Ethnic Minority Populations
By using population-based awareness strategies, screening stations, educational activities, and dissemination of cultually appropriate materials, ISHIB and the Unite Detroit for Healthy Hearts! Steering Committee worked to improve the health and life expectancy of ethnic minority populations through prevention, identification and treatment of hypertension. There were two key program components:
- Community Health Leaders' Forum
"Skills Building for Eliminating Health Disparities"
The goal of this forum was to provide skills and tools to assist professionals working in the trenches to reduce health disparities among underserved populations in metro-Detroit. Detroit area health professionals who attended gained new skills, abilities and were provided handouts, resource books, and materials to assist them in accomplishing this goal. A Health Forum attendee commented, "The information provided gives me a better understanding of my patients' needs and I will change my approach to information and instruction given to them."
- Healthy Heart Day (Cardiovascular Risk Assessment)
On Saturday, June 12, 2004 at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, Detroit residents, community leaders, and health care professionals came together for a free cardiovascular risk assessment and education program. Residents were provided with free blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes screenings along with medicine counseling and educational materials.
