Conference Highlights

Impressive advances in treating many chronic diseases have been heralded over the last few decades. Life expectancy has increased significantly for both men and women in the US, moreover the numbers of years of health living has increased. However, despite the tremendous gains, significant differences in healthcare outcomes continue to persist in certain ethnic minorities, who continue to remain at a serious disadvantage for receiving optimal medical care.

The disparate incidence of heart, kidney, and neurologic disease among minority populations signals a gap in US healthcare delivery. African Americans develop risk factors for cardiovascular disease at alarming rates compared to the general population. Nearly 4 in every 10 African-American adults have cardiovascular disease. Amongst Hispanic Americans, there is a disparate burden of risk factors for CVD including obesity and diabetes.

In order to address ethnic disparities, ISHIB will convene its 20th annual conference (ISHIB2005) in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The conference will bring together leading healthcare practitioners, researchers, and public health professionals from around the world to share ideas and generate solutions to bridge the gap in minority health.

The ISHIB Board of Trustees appointed Kenneth Jamerson, MD (University of Michigan Health Center) and Kwame Osei, MD (Ohio State University Medical Center) as Scientific Co-Chairs. The Scientific Co-Chairs have assembled a multidisciplinary planning committee dedicated to developing a challenging, clinically practical, educational and networking experience. The Scientific Program will feature 3 plenary sessions, 4 workshops, 6 symposia, and poster and oral abstracts of new research on cardiovascular disease and other issues of importance to ethnic minority health. The wide range of programming will include findings from the most recent clinical trials, to proven approaches for cardiovascular disease treatment and prevention, to sessions emphasizing behavioral techniques to help patients modify behaviors that affect health.

Supported Symposia

Supported symposia will address a variety of topics in a 1 1/2 to 2 hours breakfast/lunch/dinner/lecture format. Some topics that will be addressed will include hypertension, diabetes, renal disease and pharmacological advances to include the use of Calcium Channel Blockers, ACE Inhibitors, Recent Advances in Aldosterone Blockade, Target Organ Disease, The Role of ARB's in Cardio Renal Risk Reduction, and a review of recent clinical studies.

Workshops

Workshops will address all topics covered in plenary sessions in an interactive, peer-directed, topic specific format.

Plenary Sessions

Plenary sessions will evaluate the general guidelines controversy and consensus issues surrounding the public implications of hypertension in ethnic minority populations as well as the role of nurses and other health professionals in the treatment and control of hypertension. Plenary sessions will be conducted in a lecture format and will address the burden of CVD risk factors from childhood throughout adult life, indigent care, basic and clinical science of hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases, congestive heart failure, refractory hypertension and kidney failure. The contemporary treatment of cardiovascular disease will be illustrated with discussion of recent and ongoing clinical trials. Special emphasis will be given to the control of risk factors with the use of powerful pharmacological agents as well as hygienic measures.
