CEO's Corner
Transformation is evolution not revolution. Changing an organization’s genetic code requires recognition of shifts in the members’ business environment, good research, willingness to suspend disbelief, courageous decisions, adherence to a compelling message, and strong champions. Our Society is readied to respond to its environmental shift and reinvent itself to meet its customers' needs--you are our customer. Our goal is to assess the current and future markets and evaluate benchmarks of other societies and partners to see how they have tackled issues that lead to success. To get a handle on our professional climate, the Society must focus on questions such as “What types of new applications/methodologies are applicable in the future that are different from what you are doing today?” “How does moving to these new applications affect the services provided by ISHIB?” and “Who else will be involved in these new applications and are they competitors, partners, or both?” Association management has unique challenges that are affected by business aptitudes and attitudes that govern our execution approaches. The climate of doing business has evolved. The very best we can expect from our customers is to react to changes sooner rather than later. However, by studying its customers ISHIB can anticipate emerging needs. The process includes the following steps: 1. Identify new demands that customers will place on the association’s members. 2. Identify the new skills, services, and partners the members will need to meet the new demands. 3. Recommend the new functions, products, and services that the association will need to help its members meet new needs. 4. Define a new position and revenue models for the association based on a new mission. So that ISHIB can continue to grow, we must be engaged in at least the following four activities: 1) increasing our visibility, 2) expanding our programs, 3) broadening our revenue sources, and 4) increasing non-financial resources. Please work with us as we continue to address and readdress our organizational strategies. We are a membership organization. We require your input and your participation. Please participate in one of the many opportunities that are values to the benefits of membership. Renew your current membership, become a life member and encourage your colleagues, private businesses, and institutions to become members. What a value life is! |

| Prescriptions For Health
Prescriptions for Health, an hour-long, call-in radio program on issues important to the health of ethnic patients, will be expanded in 2003 to become a weekly show. The program is broadcast from the campus of Clark Atlanta University on WCLK 91.9 in Atlanta, Georgia. As the talk show expands to the weekly timeslot, format and guest placement will also change. A local Atlanta guest will discuss the topic with a guest in another part of the world to provide a more global perspective. Topics are run the gamut, and we welcome your comments on topics you think should be discussed. Anyone calling the ISHIB office will hear Prescriptions for Health as on-hold audio, and the show is audiocasted form our website. |

In addition to the leadership, each council will have 5-6 members. Each council is charged to establish organizational priorities for action in their respective area for professional education, research issues requiring communication to members, and research issues requiring communication to the lay public. The committees will report to the Board of Trustees through the President of ISHIB. Recommendations for action are requested within 3 months of the council formation. | Uniformed Services University
ISHIB will work with the Uniformed Services University (USU) to establish a program addressing issues related to cultural competency and health literacy and around diabetes. Dr. Evelyn Lewis, Director of USU, suggests, “This is a natural fit for the progress of our programs here at USU. ISHIB has a solid track record in reaching many of these target audiences. We believe we can improve both of these important areas through our collaboration.” Dr. Lewis and Dr. Richard Tannebaum, Director of Program Services, will serve as liaison with ISHIB to establish these programs. The programs as planned with also include a tool to improve health provider and patient relationship through role-play models. |

| Addressing the Nursing Shortage
ISHIB’s seat on the National Black Nurses Foundation (NBNF) Advisory Board includes responsibilities to address the importance of front-line caregivers and the erosion in the ranks of our nation’s nurses. An advisory board meeting was convened October 24-25 in Washington, DC to talk about the significant impact of this shortage. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation funds the project. Many of the NBNF Advisory Board members are also members of ISHIB. These include: Hilda Richard, Derrick Humphries, Larry Lucas, Linda Burnes Bolton, Ophelia Long, and Stephanie Ferguson. C. Alicia Georges serves as President of the Foundation. The meeting was held during a 2-day work session, The Gloria R. Smith Issues Forum, about health status and the impact of the global nursing shortage; policy perspective and leadership issues and mandate; relationship between the quality of care rendered in hospitals that serve predominately African American communities and the number of register nurses employed; and characteristics of foreign nurses in US critical access hospitals. |
